Who can apply

Any nationality, including applicants currently outside the UK. An eligible UK research host, host employment and relevant UK professional registration by the award start are required. The call permits overseas applicants and limited overseas research, subject to its visa, host and policy conditions.

Registered healthcare professionals, including doctors, dentists, GPs, nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, healthcare scientists, pharmacists, clinical psychologists and veterinarians, pursuing independent research relevant to human health. A PhD or equivalent must be completed before the award starts; contact MRC before applying if it is not yet complete. There is no age or years-since-PhD rule. Applicants need a distinct research plan that does not substantially overlap with current group leaders or sponsors, evidence of career development/productivity, an eligible UK host and plans for clinical activity during or after the award. Doctors/dentists normally need specialty-registrar, consultant or equivalent GP status; unfinished specialty training requires plans and deanery consultation. Other healthcare professionals must have completed professional training. Veterinarians must be registered and belong to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. International applicants need relevant UK statutory registration, or plans to obtain it by the award start. You cannot apply after a recent MRC fellowship application within the last year or two previous attempts, while a conflicting UKRI fellowship/new-investigator or grant application is under assessment, after a comparable early-independence award, or after grants showing that you have already established research independence and a research team. Host employment is required. You cannot retain a salaried position alongside the fellowship; an exceptional approved career change requires relinquishing the role or making it proleptic for the award. A permanent independent position is normally not competitive. A senior host-department sponsor is required. The fellowship normally supports up to five years, with a shorter request discussed in advance. It should start between October 2027 and January 2028 unless MRC agrees otherwise. Part-time/clinical-work arrangements have specific limits. The call excludes PhD studentships, publication costs, bridge funding, sponsor/mentor costs and large/senior research teams. Additional policy conditions: the host must submit the application. Overseas applicants need the required UK work visa/permit. UKRI employees applying in the same MRC institute need exceptional director-requested permission at least two months before closing and must meet the stated post-funding conditions. Part-time awards require at least 0.5 FTE; medical applicants cannot use them to continue higher specialty training. Clinical sessions and other commitments have limits set out below. Normally only two submissions per scheme are allowed, at least a year apart; changing project or host does not reset this. Conflicting UKRI fellowship/new-investigator and project-grant applications are excluded, and simultaneous MRC project-lead applications are not allowed. Host-department support is required. Project co-leads and student costs are excluded. NHS, ethics, biosafety and industry-collaboration conditions apply where relevant; see the complete policy and cost conditions below.

Benefits and funding

Up to five years of salary and justified research support, normally at 80% of full economic cost plus 100% of permitted exceptions. No fixed maximum request is stated. Eligible items include limited research/technical staff, equipment/consumables, training, travel, data costs, public partnerships, relevant NHS costs and specified visa/dependent costs. The host normally contributes the remaining 20%; excluded items and overseas/second-centre conditions apply.

Details from the provider

Opportunity overview Who can apply Current shared MRC policy conditions The host submits the application through the UKRI Funding Service and must approve it before the funder's deadline. International applicants may apply from outside the UK, but must meet Home Office requirements and hold any necessary work visa/permit for the fellowship. The general UKRI residence policy expressly allows exceptions for schemes permitting overseas applicants; it does not override this call's international route. UKRI employees seeking a fellowship in the same MRC institute need exceptional prior written permission, requested by the institute director or deputy at least two months before closing. The case must demonstrate a substantial role change; permission is normally limited to grant-supported posts or non-core-funded supernumerary posts (normally for at least 12 months). Fellows may normally spend up to 12 months at a second UK/overseas organisation or in industry; longer overseas periods require advance MRC discussion. Part-time awards require at least 0.5 full-time equivalent and must meet the call's personal/clinical-working conditions. Medically qualified applicants cannot use a part-time award to continue higher specialty training. Clinical work normally occupies up to 0.2 FTE of a full-time award; the guide describes a separate clinical-research-training craft-specialty/patient-oriented exception of up to 0.4 FTE. Confirm that exception’s scheme-specific applicability with MRC before relying on it. Other commitments normally cannot exceed six hours per week, pro rata; additional time requires prior permission. Normally only two submissions per MRC fellowship scheme are allowed, with at least a year between submissions; changing project or institution does not reset the count. Earlier resubmission needs MRC discussion. Only one UKRI fellowship of the same type may be under consideration. No part of the fellowship project can be under assessment as another grant, and the applicant cannot simultaneously lead an MRC grant application. Other-funder applications must be declared and remain compatible with fellowship time/funding conditions. A suitable host-department supervisor or senior sponsor must provide a support statement. Project co-leads and student costs are not permitted. Relevant ethics, animal/human-tissue, biosafety and NHS requirements apply to the proposed project; projects incurring NHS costs require the stated online CPMS/SoECAT funder-export documents. Industry collaborations must follow MRC's Industry Collaboration Framework. Applicants must use the current call and linked policy guide for the required project, data-management, facilities, cost and host-support documents. How to apply Submit through the host organisation and UKRI Funding Service by 13 January 2027 at 4pm UK time, allowing time for host approval. Include the project and career-development case, sponsor support, clinical/professional-registration information, justified resources, data-management and required ethical/regulatory documentation.
