Opportunity overview

Gerda Henkel Foundation research-project grants support work in the historical humanities, including archaeology, history, art history, historical Islamic studies, legal history and the history of science. Related disciplines may apply when the main research question is historical. Project funding can support research teams or projects seeking travel and material support.

The current committee-round deadline is 20 November 2026, with decisions planned for April 2027 and funding starting no earlier than May 2027. Smaller requests of up to €30,000 use a separate simplified timetable. Individual research scholarships and PhD scholarships are distinct funding routes with different forms and criteria.

Who can apply

Researchers who actively participate in the proposed historical-humanities project may apply regardless of nationality or place of work. Doctoral candidates cannot apply through the research-project route and must use the separate PhD scholarship programme. Anyone seeking a personal research scholarship must also satisfy the Foundation’s scholarship criteria.

Benefits and funding

Approved project costs can include research scholarships, travel, materials and other eligible research expenses. Personnel support is provided through the permitted scholarship or assistance arrangements. Project staff salaries, tuition fees and institutional overheads are excluded; there is no single guaranteed award amount.

How to apply

  1. Use the electronic research-project form. Prepare the project description, timetable and itemised budget in euros; the description is limited to eight pages, excluding specified supporting material.
  2. Include the applicants’ CVs and publication lists, relevant academic documents and any references required when requesting scholarship support. Read the budget guidance and use the correct funding route.
  3. Submit the complete committee-round application by 20 November 2026. Requests of up to €30,000 follow the simplified procedure instead of this deadline; do not send duplicate documents by email or post.
