Who can apply
You must apply as a team. Each application must include 1 lead applicant and 1 to 4 coapplicants. The team must include at least one genomics or genomics related life sciences researcher and at least one humanities, social sciences or bioethics researcher, plus meaningful involvement of wider key stakeholders in shaping the agenda. The lead applicant can be at any career stage and must be based at an eligible administering organisation located anywhere except mainland China. The lead applicant must have a PhD or have at least 4 years of equivalent research experience. The administering organisation must be able to accept Wellcome’s grant conditions. Activities that involve transfer of funds into mainland China are not eligible. Commercial organisations cannot be the administering organisation, but coapplicants or collaborators can be based at commercial organisations. Only one application per person to this call in any role, lead or coapplicant.
Benefits and funding
Up to £500,000 per award, duration 12 to 24 months. Coapplicants are required. Salary support rules depend on location and organisation type, and lead and coapplicants must normally contribute at least 10 percent research time to claim salary contributions where applicable.

Genomics in Context Awards support teams to catalyse discovery research by building new collaborations across genomics related life sciences, humanities, social sciences, bioethics and wider societal stakeholders. The award is designed for early stage agenda setting, research ideation, design and partnership building, so teams can explore innovative ways of working and shape future genomics research directions in context. Each award provides up to £500,000 for 12 to 24 months. The administering organisation can be based anywhere in the world except mainland China, and must be able to sign up to Wellcome’s grant conditions. Coapplicants are required, with 1 to 4 coapplicants per application, alongside any number of collaborators or consultants as needed. eligibility: Teams must include one researcher from a genomics related area of the life sciences, one researcher from the humanities, social sciences or bioethics, and at least one wider key stakeholder involved in shaping and developing the research. The lead applicant can be at any career stage, based anywhere except mainland China, and must have a PhD or four years of equivalent research experience. The lead applicant must also have a permanent, open ended or long term rolling contract, or a guarantee of one, for the duration of the award, and be based at an eligible administering organisation that can accept Wellcome grant conditions. Each application must include 1 to 4 coapplicants, who can be from the life sciences, humanities, social sciences, bioethics, or be a wider stakeholder, and be based anywhere except mainland China. You cannot apply if you plan activities that involve transfer of funds into mainland China, if you are already on another application to this call (only one application total per person as lead or coapplicant), or if you have already applied for or hold the maximum number of Wellcome awards for your career stage. Commercial organisations are not eligible as administering organisations, but coapplicants and collaborators can be based at commercial organisations.
