Opportunity overview

The South African Women in Biotechnology Programme supports a three-year PhD at ICGEB Cape Town, starting in early 2027. Run with South Africa’s Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, the fellowship combines doctoral research with mentoring, peer learning and access to an international scientific community.

Your proposed project must fit a Cape Town research area: infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, bioinformatics, plant systems biology or virology. A group leader must agree to support the project before you apply. The programme also provides research mobility opportunities at ICGEB’s components in Italy and India.

Who can apply

Women who are South African citizens or permanent residents with a valid South African ID. Applicants need an MSc or a supervisor’s letter confirming the intention to submit the MSc thesis; proof of the degree is required before the fellowship starts. Written endorsement from the relevant ICGEB Cape Town group leader is mandatory. Preference is given to Black and disabled applicants.

Benefits and funding

University of Cape Town tuition and a ZAR 16,500 monthly stipend for three years, subject to satisfactory performance. Additional mobility support is provided for research at ICGEB Trieste in Italy and New Delhi in India, alongside mentoring and scientific training.
