Opportunity overview
This fellowship enables an established independent researcher at an eligible UK institution to focus on research by obtaining relief from teaching, administration and pastoral responsibilities. It covers the cost of a teaching replacement, subject to the scheme’s salary limit, and up to £5,000 in research expenses. Support lasts from one academic term to one year. The research must fit the Royal Society’s natural-science remit. The current application round closes on 04 November 2026.
Who can apply
Researchers holding a permanent post at an eligible UK university or research institution; the fellowship is hosted at the applicant’s own UK institution.
Applicants need a PhD or equivalent, a permanent post at an eligible UK institution and an established, fully independent research programme. The proposed natural-science research must benefit from relief from teaching, administrative and pastoral duties. Normally, one year or more of sabbatical/other duty-relief support during the three years before submission excludes the applicant; significant existing funding must be explained if it did not cover the needed relief. The fellowship must be hosted at the applicant’s own eligible UK institution, with head-of-department support and institutional approval. Clinical/interventional human research, social sciences and humanities are excluded unless explicitly permitted. Career breaks and personal circumstances are considered under the scheme’s rules.
