Who can apply
Early career researchers from any discipline. You must have a completed PhD or equivalent higher research degree by the application deadline, or for disciplines where a PhD is not typical you must show at least 4 years of equivalent research experience. Usually you should have no more than 3 years of postdoctoral research experience by the deadline, unless you can justify career impact factors. You must be the sole lead applicant since coapplicants are not accepted. Your host administering organisation must be eligible and based in the UK, Republic of Ireland, or eligible low or middle income countries, excluding India and mainland China.
Benefits and funding
Salary for the grantholder plus up to £400,000 for research expenses. Some eligible costs may be requested outside the £400,000 limit depending on Wellcome’s rules for this scheme. Duration usually 5 years, with three application rounds per year.

Wellcome Early Career Awards support early career researchers from any discipline to design and deliver an innovative research project that advances understanding in their field and or develops methods, frameworks, tools or techniques that benefit health related research. Awards cover the lead applicant’s salary plus up to £400,000 in research expenses, with some additional eligible costs that do not count toward the £400,000 cap. The award is usually 5 years, can be shorter for some disciplines, and may be longer only if held part time. The administering organisation must be eligible and located in the UK, Republic of Ireland, or eligible low or middle income countries excluding India and mainland China. eligibility: Early career researcher with a completed PhD or equivalent higher research degree by the application deadline, or at least four years of equivalent research experience for disciplines where a PhD may not apply. Typically no more than three years of postdoctoral experience at the deadline unless you can justify career impact factors. Must be able to lead the project as the sole lead applicant since coapplicants are not accepted. Not eligible if you hold an existing tenured salaried post for the duration of the award unless based in a low or middle income country, or if you are currently awaiting a decision from a previous application to this scheme, or if you hold have held or have accepted an offer for an equivalent award at this career stage.
