The Royal Society
This Royal Society award supports newly independent research leaders in the UK working with partners in Brazil or South Africa. The programme funds jointly developed natural-science research addressing development challenges in health, energy, climate, food, nature or the environment.
Who can apply
A UK-based independent research lead applies jointly with an eligible independent lead in Brazil or South Africa. Both must hold eligible posts for the grant; the proposal must be ODA-eligible.

Wellcome
Wellcome Discovery Awards support established researchers, individually or as teams, to pursue substantial and innovative research programmes. Funding can run for up to eight years, with an average award of £3.5 million; requests over £5 million receive additional scrutiny.
Who can apply
Lead applicants must be based at an eligible nonprofit institution in the UK, Ireland or a low- or middle-income country excluding India and mainland China. From 29 October 2026, the permitted host locations become the UK and listed low- or middle-income countries in Africa, South Asia and South-East Asia. Team coapplicants may be based elsewhere except mainland China.

Wellcome Career Development Awards

Wellcome Career Development Awards support mid-career researchers who are ready to lead substantial and innovative research programmes. Funding usually runs for eight years.
Who can apply
Lead applicants must be based at an eligible nonprofit institution in the UK, Ireland or a low- or middle-income country excluding India and mainland China. EMBO
EMBO supports postdoctoral researchers through an international research move for up to two years. The fellowship provides a salary or stipend, relocation support and help for fellows with children.
Who can apply
Applicants of any nationality can move to an EMBC member-state host. Hosts in Chile, India, Singapore or Taiwan, and hosts in other countries, have additional nationality, PhD-country and departure-country requirements. Host-country residence limits also apply.

EMBO
EMBO Scientific Exchange Grants fund research exchanges of up to three months between laboratories in eligible countries, covering travel and subsistence costs for the fellow.
Who can apply
Any nationality, but your current institution must be in an EMBC member state, Chile, India, Singapore or Taiwan, or qualify through a listed Japanese JST programme. The exchange must be international.

IDFA Bertha Fund
The IBF Classic funding scheme offers grants for documentary projects at all stages, with a maximum of €7,500 for development and €25,000 for production/post-production.
Who can apply
Directors must be nationals of, and live and work in, an IBF-listed country in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Oceania or Latin America/Caribbean. The currently linked 2026 list includes Malaysia; check the list for your country and the 2027 round.

TWAS Visiting Expert Programme
TWAS
Host institutions in developing countries can invite internationally recognised scientists for research and training visits. TWAS covers round-trip economy travel; the host covers local expenses.
Who can apply
The applicant is a host institution in an eligible developing country in the Global South. The invited expert may be of any nationality.
