Opportunity overview

Rolling support for data-driven investigative journalism on gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, for newsrooms and journalists worldwide.

No fixed budget range: the call reports a typical Pulitzer Center grant of about US$5,000, with larger or smaller awards possible. Support covers justified reporting costs. Newsrooms are expected to pay freelancers; an exceptional request for reporter time needs explanation in the budget. Contractor/data-research/illustration costs can be included. Staff salaries, already-paid team-member stipends, equipment purchases, overhead and indirect costs are excluded; equipment rental is considered case by case.

The general guidance excludes books (an independently published story that later becomes part of a book may qualify), feature-length films (short documentaries with ambitious distribution may qualify), general outlet expenses, start-up seed money, routine breaking news, advocacy/marketing and solely academic data projects.

Who can apply

Newsrooms and freelance, staff or collaborating journalists worldwide. Proposals must investigate gender equality or women’s and girls’ empowerment, with credible publication plans and conditional outlet/safety requirements.

Newsrooms and independent, freelance or staff journalists worldwide may apply, including collaborating teams. The project must use investigative and data-driven reporting to examine gender equality or the empowerment of women and girls. A credible distribution plan and editor/outlet interest or commitment are required; freelancers should seek corroborable interest, normally from more than one outlet. Applications must be in English and include a project summary of no more than 250 words, a preliminary itemised budget, publication plan, three work samples, three professional references and a CV. Detailed additional materials are optional. For reporting in hostile or dangerous settings, journalists and potential outlets must follow ACOS Alliance safety principles. A freelancer needs a firm assignment from a news organisation taking full responsibility for their well-being. This call permits an exceptional, explained request for freelancer time costs, despite the general travel-grant guide’s no-applicant-stipends wording. It does not permit staff salaries or stipends for journalists/team members employed by a newsroom or already paid by a publisher. Costs must serve journalism rather than solely academic research.
