Opportunity overview
The Pulitzer Center’s Global Reporting Grants support in-depth journalism on critical issues overlooked by other media. Staff and freelance journalists worldwide may propose reporting in any country and across media formats. Awards cover reasonable reporting costs rather than routine outlet expenses, with international-travel awards commonly between US$5,000 and US$10,000. Applicants need a strong story proposal, distribution plan and outlet interest or commitment. Conflict-zone reporting requires an assigning outlet to take responsibility for the journalist’s safety. Applications have no deadline and are considered on a rolling basis.
Who can apply
Staff and freelance journalists of all nationalities, based anywhere, reporting in any country. A credible publication/distribution plan and outlet commitment are required; additional safety conditions apply in hostile environments.
Open to staff and freelance reporters, photographers, audio/video journalists and documentary filmmakers worldwide, of all nationalities. Propose in-depth, underreported journalism with a detailed distribution plan and outlet interest or commitment; final approval requires an outlet commitment. For conflict zones or hostile environments, the journalist and outlet must follow ACOS safety principles; freelancers must have a firm assignment from a news organisation taking full responsibility for their safety. Include appropriate training and safety costs where relevant. General reporting grants exclude books as standalone outputs, feature-length films, staff salaries, equipment purchases, general outlet expenses, startup seed money, routine breaking news, advocacy/marketing, and data projects solely for academic research. Short documentaries and independently published stories that later form part of a book may qualify. Overhead and indirect costs are excluded.
