Opportunity overview
The Pulitzer Center supports ambitious journalism on global health inequities, systemic barriers to care, emerging risks and potential solutions. Freelance and staff journalists, newsrooms and collaborating teams worldwide may propose projects with credible publication plans. Grants can support international travel or extra reporting help for U.S. outlets, and health stories for established, trustworthy outlets in any country. There is no fixed award range or guaranteed grant.
Reporting costs must be justified. This call allows explained freelancer-time support in exceptional cases; that call-specific exception must be read alongside the general travel-grant guide. Staff salaries and already-paid team-member stipends are excluded. Books and feature-length films are excluded, with exceptions for independently published journalism later used in a book and short documentaries with ambitious distribution. Equipment purchases, general outlet costs, start-up seed money, routine breaking news, advocacy/marketing and purely academic data projects are excluded.
Who can apply
Freelance and staff journalists, newsrooms and collaborating reporting teams worldwide. Stories need credible distribution through established, trustworthy outlets; conditional safety and outlet-assignment rules apply.
Freelance or staff journalists, text/broadcast/multimedia newsrooms and collaborating reporting teams in the U.S. and worldwide may apply. Proposals must report on global health inequities, risks or solutions, with detailed distribution plans and outlet commitment. The call funds international travel or reporting help for U.S. outlets and ambitious global-health stories for trustworthy outlets in any country. Apply in English with a project summary of no more than 250 words, itemised budget, publication plan, three published work samples, three professional references and a CV. Freelancers need corroborable editor/outlet interest, normally from more than one outlet. For hostile or dangerous reporting, journalists and outlets must follow ACOS Alliance principles; freelancers need a firm assignment from a news organisation taking full responsibility for their well-being. Newsrooms are expected to pay freelancers. An exceptional request for a reporter’s time must be explained in the budget; staff salaries and stipends for journalists already employed/paid by a newsroom or publisher are excluded. The project must serve journalism rather than solely academic research.
